Punch Machine Operator – Production

Location: Buntingford, Hertfordshire

Job Purpose

The Punch Machine Operator (CNC Punch Press Operator) is responsible for configuring, operating, and maintaining CNC punch press machinery to cut, shape, and form sheet metal and other materials in accordance with technical drawings and production specifications. The operator ensures high‑precision output, consistent quality, and safe working practices while supporting efficient production flow. This role requires strong technical ability, attention to detail, and the physical capability to work in a fast‑paced manufacturing environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

Health, Safety & Compliance:

  • Follow all health and safety procedures, including correct use of PPE and safe handling of materials.
  • Keep the work area clean, tidy, and free from hazards.
  • Ensure safe operation of machinery and report any safety concerns immediately.
  • Complete equipment checks and report any faults or maintenance needs.
  • Adhere to company policies, safety guidelines, and housekeeping standards.

Machine Setup & Operation:

  • Set up and operate CNC punch press machinery in accordance with job specifications.
  • Configure machine programs, tooling, and dies based on technical drawings and production requirements.
  • Load sheet metal materials safely and ensure correct alignment and positioning.
  • Perform test runs and make adjustments to achieve accurate cuts, shapes, and hole patterns.
  • Monitor machine performance throughout production and respond to alarms or irregularities.

Maintenance & Production Support:

  • Perform routine machine maintenance, including cleaning, lubrication, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Report mechanical issues or required repairs to supervisors or maintenance teams.
  • Assist with material handling, machine changeovers, and general workshop tasks when required.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors to support smooth production flow.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and product quality.
  • Work closely with team members to meet daily production targets.

Quality Control:

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and work instructions.
  • Conduct in‑process inspections using measuring tools such as callipers, gauges, and rulers.
  • Ensure all punched components meet dimensional, quality, and finish standards.
  • Identify defects or inconsistencies and take corrective action promptly.
  • Maintain accurate records of production output and material usage.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Technical Expertise: Proven experience operating CNC punch press machinery, with the ability to read and interpret technical blueprints, engineering drawings, and fabrication specifications.
  • Industry Experience: Typically 1–3 years of hands‑on experience in sheet‑metal fabrication or a similar manufacturing environment.
  • Software Knowledge: Familiarity with CAM programming software such as Amada AP100, BySoft, or equivalent systems used for punch press setup and nesting.
  • Mechanical & Measurement Skills: Competent use of measuring tools (callipers, gauges, rulers) and strong understanding of tooling, dies, and material behaviour.
  • Problem‑Solving Ability: Good mechanical aptitude with the ability to troubleshoot minor machine issues and adjust settings for accuracy.
  • Attention to Detail: Commitment to producing high‑precision components and maintaining consistent quality standards.
  • Physical & Safety Requirements: Ability to lift and handle sheet‑metal materials, stand for extended periods, and follow strict PPE and safety protocols at all times.
  • Adaptability: Willingness to learn new equipment, processes, and production methods as required.

Working Hours

This is a permanent late-shift role, working 1:00 pm – 10:00 pm, 40 hours per week. Overtime opportunities are available beyond the standard 40 hours. The late shift also includes a premium, equivalent to an additional bonus hour.
