Job Purpose
The Construction Manager (Mechanical) is responsible for planning, coordinating, executing, and delivering all mechanical construction activities associated with hyperscale and colocation data centre projects. The role ensures mechanical systems are installed safely, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with project specifications, quality standards, and commissioning requirements.
The successful candidate will work closely with clients, consultants, subcontractors, commissioning teams, and internal stakeholders to deliver mission-critical infrastructure projects to the highest standards.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Manage all mechanical construction activities throughout the project lifecycle.
- Oversee installation of mechanical systems including:
- HVAC systems
- Chilled water systems
- CRAH/CRAC units
- Pipework installations
- Cooling towers
- Pumps and associated plant
- Fuel systems
- Fire protection interfaces
- Ensure works are delivered in line with project programme and milestones.
- Monitor and drive mechanical subcontractor performance.
- Coordinate mechanical works with electrical, civil and architectural disciplines.
- Identify and mitigate construction risks and delays.
- Promote and maintain a strong safety culture across the project.
- Ensure compliance with all health, safety and environmental regulations.
- Conduct site inspections, safety audits and toolbox talks.
- Review and approve method statements and risk assessments.
- Ensure all works are completed in accordance with company and client safety requirements.
- Participate in project planning meetings and construction reviews.
- Develop short-term and long-term construction strategies.
- Coordinate procurement requirements with project and commercial teams.
- Review design documentation and identify constructability issues.
- Manage interface coordination between contractors and stakeholders.
- Ensure mechanical installations meet project specifications and industry standards.
- Implement and monitor project quality plans.
- Manage inspections, testing and quality assurance processes.
- Resolve technical and quality-related issues on site.
- Ensure completion of inspection and test records.
- Support commercial teams with change management and cost control.
- Review subcontractor progress and performance.
- Assist with assessment of variations and claims.
- Ensure efficient use of labour, materials and equipment.
- Support mechanical pre-commissioning and commissioning activities.
- Ensure systems are delivered ready for integrated systems testing.
- Coordinate closeout activities and documentation.
- Support client demonstrations and final handover processes.
- Ensure all mechanical O&M documentation is completed and submitted.
- Act as the primary mechanical construction lead on site.
- Maintain effective communication with clients, consultants and subcontractors.
- Provide regular progress reports to senior management.
- Attend project meetings and present updates on mechanical works.
- Represent the business, upholding our core values and behaviours with all internal and external customers, clients and third parties.
- Maintain business and client confidentiality, adhering to applicable Data Protection regulations and Information Security Standards in line with company and group policies and procedures.
Essential Skills and Experience
- Degree in Mechanical Engineering or Building Services Engineering.
- Relevant construction management qualifications desirable.
- SMSTS, CSCS and First Aid certification (or equivalent).
- Health and Safety qualifications such as IOSH or NEBOSH preferred.
- Proven experience in mechanical construction management.
- Proven experience delivering large-scale data centre projects.
- Experience with data centres’ white and grey spaces (at least one)
- Experience within mission-critical environments.
- Strong understanding of mechanical building services systems.
- Experience of liquid-cooling or chiller systems in a data centre environment
- Experience managing subcontractors and multidisciplinary teams.
- Track record of delivering projects safely, on time and within budget.
- Commissioning and operational readiness experience.
