Press Brake Operator – Production

Location: Buntingford, Hertfordshire

Job Purpose

The Press Brake Operator is responsible for setting up, programming, and operating press brake machinery to bend, fold, and shape sheet metal in accordance with technical blueprints and engineering specifications. This role ensures precision in metal fabrication by selecting the correct tooling, performing accurate quality checks, and carrying out routine machine maintenance. The operator must maintain high safety standards, demonstrate strong technical ability, and work efficiently within a fast‑paced production environment.

Duties & Responsibilities

Health, Safety & Compliance:

  • Follow all company health and safety procedures, including the correct use of PPE.
  • Maintain a clean, organised, and hazard‑free work area.
  • Ensure safe operation of machinery and report any safety concerns immediately.
  • Adhere to manual handling guidelines and safe working practices at all times.

Machine Setup & Operation:

  • Set up and operate press brake machinery in line with job specifications and production requirements.
  • Program machine settings, bend sequences, and back‑gauge positions based on technical drawings.
  • Select and install appropriate tooling, punches, and dies for each job.
  • Load and position sheet metal materials safely and accurately.
  • Perform test bends and make adjustments to achieve correct angles, dimensions, and tolerances.
  • Monitor machine performance and respond to alarms, errors, or irregularities.

Maintenance & Production Support:

  • Perform routine machine maintenance, including cleaning, lubrication, and basic troubleshooting.
  • Report mechanical issues or required repairs to supervisors or maintenance teams.
  • Assist with material handling, tooling changes, and general workshop tasks when required.
  • Communicate effectively with team members and supervisors to support smooth production flow.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and product quality.

Quality Control:

  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and work instructions.
  • Conduct in‑process inspections using measuring tools such as callipers, protractors, angle finders, and gauges.
  • Ensure all finished components meet dimensional, quality, and finish standards.
  • Identify defects or inconsistencies and take corrective action promptly.
  • Maintain accurate production records and documentation.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Technical Expertise: Experience setting up and operating press brake machinery, with the ability to read and interpret technical blueprints and engineering specifications.
  • Industry Experience: Typically 1–3 years of hands‑on experience in sheet‑metal fabrication or a similar manufacturing environment.
  • Tooling Knowledge: Strong understanding of press brake tooling, bend allowances, and material behaviour.
  • Measurement Skills: Competent use of measuring equipment such as callipers, angle gauges, and protractors.
  • Software Familiarity: Experience with CNC press brake programming interfaces; knowledge of CAM or offline programming software is beneficial.
  • Attention to Detail: Commitment to producing accurate, high‑quality components with consistent precision.
  • Physical & Safety Requirements: Ability to lift and handle sheet‑metal materials, stand for extended periods, and follow strict PPE and safety protocols.
  • Adaptability: Willingness to learn new equipment, processes, and production methods as required.

Working Hours

This is a permanent late-shift role, working 1:00 pm – 10:00 pm, 40 hours per week. Overtime opportunities are available beyond the standard 40 hours. The late shift also includes a premium, equivalent to an additional bonus hour.
