Factory Supervisor – Paint Line

Location: Buntingford, Hertfordshire

Job Purpose

The Paint Line Supervisor is responsible for leading and coordinating all activities within the paint line area to ensure safe, efficient, and high‑quality production. This role oversees daily operations, maintains robust work systems and procedures, and supports a high‑performing team environment, including preparing materials and spraying components as required. The supervisor ensures that all products meet company quality standards, production targets are achieved, and the department operates in line with health, safety, and operational policies.

Duties & Responsibilities

Health, Safety & Compliance:

  • Ensure the health, safety, and well-being of all staff and visitors within the department.
  • Enforce strict adherence to company H&S policies, safe working practices, and cleanliness standards.
  • Verify that all equipment inspection sheets, safety checks, and PAT tests are completed and up to date.
  • Maintain a safe working environment and ensure all team members follow correct procedures.

Leadership & Team Management:

  • Act as the primary point of contact between the Paint Line team and Production Management.
  • Lead, motivate, and coach team members to achieve departmental objectives.
  • Set clear daily/weekly/monthly goals and communicate expectations effectively.
  • Mentor team members, support their development, and identify training needs.
  • Conduct performance reviews and support staff welfare and engagement.
  • Organise and allocate tasks to a team of approximately 4–5 operatives.

Production & Workflow Management:

  • Supervise the automated paint line to ensure a smooth, efficient workflow.
  • Plan and prepare production schedules, adjusting as required to meet deadlines.
  • Ensure products are produced on time, to specification, and to the highest quality standards.
  • Monitor production processes, identify inefficiencies, and implement improvements.
  • Coordinate with other departments, suppliers, and managers to support production flow.
  • Ensure the paint line operates cost‑effectively and within resource constraints.

Quality Control:

  • Carry out final quality checks to ensure all products meet company standards.
  • Monitor product standards and support the implementation of quality‑control programmes.
  • Rectify and close out defects promptly to ensure continuous improvement.
  • Maintain accurate records of stock usage and production output.

Training & Development:

  • Train new employees on safe machine operation, powder coating processes, and departmental procedures.
  • Support cross‑training and skill development within the team.
  • Promote a culture of continuous learning and operational excellence.

Reporting & Administration:

  • Submit performance reports, KPI documentation, and progress updates to management.
  • Maintain clear communication channels to address issues quickly and effectively.
  • Assist with general operative duties when required.

Essential Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience working on a powder coating line, including the ability to spray.
  • Knowledge of Gema equipment and a strong understanding of powder coating processes.
  • Manual Handling and Health & Safety qualifications (desirable).
  • First Aid at Work certification (beneficial).
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Competent in using basic workshop machinery and tools.
  • Experience in workshop or manual fabrication environments.
  • Ability to learn new skills, adapt to new production methods, and support continuous improvement.

Working Hours

This is a permanent late-shift role, working 1:00 pm – 10:00 pm, 40 hours per week. Overtime opportunities are available beyond the standard 40 hours. The late shift also includes a premium, equivalent to an additional bonus hour.
